Updated Release: On Friday 05/27/2017 at approximately 10:30pm Carteret County Deputies and Morehead City Police responded to 1805 North 20th Street, Morehead City and discovered 67-year-old Benny Earl Burney Sr. had been shot twice with a 38 caliber handgun at the hands of his 33-year-old son Benny Earl “Buddy” Burney Jr. who also took his own life. The horrific events unfolded in front of the wife and mother of the two men and she was able to leave the residence physically unharmed. Buddy Burney Jr. was suffering from extreme mental illness and detectives are unable to provide a specific motive for the assault. The Carteret County Sheriffs office extends our deepest sympathy to the Burney family as they cope with this tragedy.
Original Release: Carteret County Detectives are investigating a witnessed Murder, followed by a suicide that occurred in the 1800 block of North 20th Street in Morehead City late Friday night.
County deputies and Morehead City Police along with the Carteret County Special Response Team responded to the home just before 10:30pm on 05/26/2017. One victim was found deceased and the shooter barricaded himself inside the residence. The shooter was later located deceased armed with a small handgun after SRT members made entry into the residence. The names of the deceased are not being released until all next of kin is notified. The victim and the shooter are relatives and both lived at the home.
