BEAUFORT, NC – The former director of the Carteret County Humane Society and Animal Shelter was indicted Monday. Candace Renee Christopherson, 42, was indicted by a grand jury on one felony charge of embezzling more than $100,000 from the shelter.
Chistopherson was the director of the Animal Shelter from September 2005 until she resigned in September 2016. She was in charge of finance and fiscal operations at the Carteret County Humane Society and Animal Shelter.
Between January 2014 and July 2016, Christopherson used the shelter’s credit cards for personal or unnecessary purchases totaling more than $67,000. Investigators also found that more than $44,000 in cash generated by the shelter’s activities wasn’t deposited in the shelter’s bank account between January 2015 and last September.
Sheriff Buck praised the investigative work of the North Carolina State Auditor’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office detectives assigned to the case and the District Attorney’s office. The Sheriff also thanks the public for their patience during this investigation.
Christopherson was arrested Friday morning and is being held in the Carteret County jail under a $50,000 secured bond. She is scheduled for a first appearance in court on Monday June 12.
As this case is pending adjudication in court, no further details are being released at this time.
