BEAUFORT – Several residents from Carteret County have alerted Sheriffs officials that they have received calls from scammers who are claiming to be IRS collection agents. Scammers are attempting to convince people they owe money for a tax error and demanding immediate payment or be taken to jail.
The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents not provide any financial information to anyone over the telephone, computer, or wire anyone money that you are not familiar with. The IRS will never demand immediate payment by threatening to have the police respond to your home and take you to jail for non-compliance.
In this most recent IRS scam it has been reported that the callers have a heavy foreign accent and a New York “caller ID” may appear on your telephone screen. As with all scams never give anyone your personal information, financial or otherwise, to anyone that you are not familiar with. Anyone who fell victim to this scam is encouraged to call the Carteret County Sheriffs Office at (252) 728-8400.
