Released by: Major Jason Wank, Chief Detective
On 12/02/2015 at approximately 9:15pm Carteret County Officials located the three subjects wanted for questioning after visiting and questioning school officials in Carteret County earlier today.
The three subjects were part of the US Army Delta Civil Affairs Company stationed out of Ft. Bragg, NC. The Civil Affairs unit was conducting an official one-day exercise in the county today. The Civil Affairs team is deployed to numerous locations throughout the country and is responsible for gathering intelligence in preparation for major disasters including military incidents, hurricane and flooding disasters, and locating food banks and shelter locations. The Civil Affairs team failed to notify county officials that they would be conducting this exercise today.
Carteret County Deputies, FBI and NCIS agents met with the three men previously wanted for questioning and confirmed their military status. Commanders of the operation stated despite failing to notify the county in general the three soldiers were not authorized to visit any schools as that was not part of the Global Reaction Force Operation Plan. Command reports that the three soldiers who took it upon themselves to visit the schools had good intentions and did not mean to cause such as scare.
We are thankful this incident had a positive outcome. The citizens should be assured that under normal circumstances military operations do alert county officials when they are conducting operations in the county. This particular one fell through the cracks.
Sheriff Asa Buck would like to thank everyone who worked on this matter including the school system, all local Carteret County law enforcement agencies, State Highway Patrol, NCIS, FBI, ALE, Governor’s task force for safer schools, the Governor’s Office, and state and local emergency services.
