A Message from Sheriff Asa Buck, III

The National Sheriffs’ Association and Carteret County Sheriff’s Office recognize the nationwide seriousness of drug abuse and violence by our nation’s youth, and the urgent need to use and to expand school-based prevention education programs throughout the nation. The day-to-day struggle against alcohol abuse, tobacco, drugs and violence requires a long-term national, state and local effort and commitment.

In order to empower our youth to lead safe and healthy lives, the Carteret County Sheriff’s Office offers the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program to 5th grade students enrolled in the Carteret County Public School System.

The Carteret County D.A.R.E. program consists of a deputy from the Sheriff’s Office to serve as a positive role model while ensuring that the D.A.R.E. message is delivered effectively and professionally. D.A.R.E. provides students with the skills necessary to recognize and resist pressures to experiment with drugs and to avoid gangs and violence. Lessons emphasize self-esteem, decision making, interpersonal communications skills, the consequences of drug abuse, conflict resolution and positive alternatives to substance abuse.

With the effort of D.A.R.E. instructors, along with parents, teachers, health care professionals and all other interested parties, we can help our county youth grow into responsible and successful adults by encouraging them to “SAY NO” to drugs.

Thank you for your support.
